What A Busy Week at Wilmot  – As We Kicked Off Career Awareness Month

Wow, we have been busy at Wilmot his week learning about careers and helping students build dreams for their future.  Walk around Wilmot and you will find student pictures depicting what they dream of doing when they grow up.  

Third grade students kicked off the week learning about aviation from Mrs. McWherter, who is a pilot for United Airlines and a Wilmot mom.  We also had a visit from Mr. Ferris (a Wilmot dad), who works in aircraft maintenance and planning, also for United. Mrs. McWherter taught students about the different types of training pilots go through (including flight simulations), how pilots handle emergency procedures, and the education most pilots have.  Mr. Ferris helped us understand the important role math plays in aviation in terms of weight and balance, flight planning, understanding jet streams, atmosphere and the need to balance cabin pressure.  Students received a number of trinkets including wings, maps, airplane trading cards, and United pencils.

Second grade students learned about erosion from Stefanie Nagelbach, an erosion specialist. Mrs.Nagelbach  told students how beaches erode, what can be done to protect them and what her company does to design, restore and construct new beaches.  Students Learned about many careers they could have in this area including:  erosion specialist, designer and marine contractor.

Marla Trombetta an audiologist and Wilmot aunt visited first graders to teach them about the ear and sound.  Dr. Trombetta talked about her education and training to become a doctor of audiology.   She shared that she demonstrated grit, perseverance and a growth mindset (The Wilmot Way) as she began a study of communication disorders in college. Students watched a video and learned about different causes for hearing issues such as a buildup of wax or damage to parts of the ear, which could be caused by listening to loud noises. Students received a personal set of earplugs to help them block noise.

Progress Reports

Student progress reports for all students (K-5) will be posted in Family Access today after school.  As a reminder, we use a standards based progress report.  Progress reports are aligned to The Common Core State Standards and our standards-based instruction. Standards represent end of year expectations and information reported now identifies where your child is at this point in time (based on winter benchmarks) relative to end of year expectations.

Progress at the elementary school level is reported using a 4,3,2,1 scale based on the level of mastery students have demonstrated on various standards.  

4 – Exceeding Standards. The student consistently demonstrates an understanding and application of skills and concepts beyond the grade level standards expectation. The student exceeds grade level expectations by independently applying and utilizing concepts and skills. Depending on the subject and/or learning standard, a teacher will assign a “4” when students are either demonstrating learning standards above their own grade level or consistently extending grade level standards performance to a deeper level.

3 – Meeting Standards. A student demonstrates grade level expectations for concepts and skills. A student at a level 3 demonstrates understanding of grade level skills and concepts and requires minimal support.

2 – Working Toward Standards. The student partially demonstrates or is beginning to demonstrate an understanding and application of skills and concepts taught in class . The student may require more exposure or practice to fully demonstrate consistent understanding and application. The student is progressing toward basic understanding of grade level concepts and skills with assistance.  A grade of “2” indicates that a student is not quite where we would expect him/her to be at this point in time.

1 – Not Meeting Standards.  A student shows an emerging awareness of concepts and skills. A student at a level 1 is currently not meeting the grade level standards. The student demonstrates an inconsistent understanding and application of knowledge.

The BrightBytes 1:1 Survey is Open (2nd posting)

District 109 is committed to continue our in-depth review of the impact of our use of technology in teaching and learning. Our partnership with BrightBytes, an educational technology research company, allows us to conduct valid surveys and gain very specific, insightful and actionable data. We are seeking input from teachers and administrators, the students themselves, and parents. You should have received an email from Dr. Lubelfeld on March 1 with a link to the survey. If you haven’t yet done so, please take about 5-10 minutes to complete the BrightBytes questionnaire. The deadline to complete the survey is March 20.

Lost and Found (final posting)

Please stop by Wilmot and check the lost and found tables for missing jackets, hats, gloves, balls/toys etc.  Our lost and found closet is overflowing.  Items have been moved to tables in the inside foyer.  All unclaimed items will be donated over spring break.

Calling All Wilmot Grandparents (3rd posting)

We have started a grandparent email distribution list allowing us to share our Wilmot Word with grandparents.   Click here to add your child’s grandparents to our grandparent contact list so that we can send them news and event invitations. Please make sure you ask these special people for permission to share their contact information with us (or forward this email so they can complete the form themselves), and let them know that they can expect to receive news from District 109

Wilmot Innovation Nights(s) (ongoing posting)

As shared previously we are going to change the look and feel of our traditional showcase evening.  In order to accommodate all grade level programs and the large number of visitors, we will hold our Wilmot Innovation Night(s) over two evenings in May. Kindergarten, 2nd and 3rd grade families will join us on Thursday, May 11.  Families of 1st, 4th and 5th graders will attend on Tuesday, May 16.  These evenings will replace the showcase night previously scheduled for April 20.

    • The night show times are as follows:
      • At fair opens for 1st grade families at  5:30 (1st grade families may also visit the art fair following the concert)
      • 1st grade call time for the music concert is 5:45 pm (students will meet in the MPR)
      • 1st grade music concert begins at 6:00 pm
      • 1st and 3rd grade art fair begins at 6:30 pm
      • 3rd grade call time for the music concert is 6:45 pm (students will meet in the MPR)
